Embark on a life-changing road trip through the raw and rugged Spiti Valley – a high-altitude cold desert tucked between Tibet and India. With its dramatic terrains, centuries-old monasteries, remote villages, and moon-like landscapes, Spiti is a paradise for offbeat explorers, photographers, and those seeking spiritual and natural serenity. Buckle up for a journey into one of the most stunning and untouched regions of Himachal Pradesh.
Arrive in Manali, a scenic hill town nestled in the Kullu Valley. Upon arrival, check in to your hotel. Spend the day at leisure to acclimatize and relax after your journey. In the afternoon, visit local attractions such as Hadimba Devi Temple, Old Manali streets, Vashisht Hot Springs, and the Manali Mall Road. Enjoy dinner and overnight stay in Manali.
Start your journey early morning towards Spiti via the spectacular Rohtang Pass (13,050 ft) and Kunzum Pass (15,060 ft). After breakfast, begin your exploration of Spiti's iconic villages and gompas. Visit the majestic Key Monastery, perched on a cliff with panoramic views of the Spiti River. Head to Kibber Village, one of the highest inhabited villages in the world. Continue to Hikkim to post a letter from the world’s highest post office, visit Komic – the world’s highest village with road connectivity, and end with Langza, known for ancient fossils and the giant Buddha statue. Overnight stay at Kaza.
Today, take a detour into the lush and lesser-known Pin Valley, home to the endangered snow leopard and majestic Himalayan landscapes. Visit the charming Mudh Village, a favorite among trekkers and photographers. Later, drive to Tabo, often called the "Ajanta of the Himalayas" due to its 1000-year-old Tabo Monastery adorned with ancient murals and thankas. Overnight stay at Tabo.
After breakfast, visit Dhankar Monastery, an architectural marvel built on a cliff overlooking the confluence of the Spiti and Pin rivers. Then drive to Gue Village to witness the 500-year-old mummified remains of a Buddhist monk, preserved naturally in a glass shrine. Return to Kaza for dinner and overnight stay.
Post breakfast, begin your drive towards the breathtaking Chandratal Lake ("Moon Lake"). Located at 14,000 ft, the lake mesmerizes with its changing colors and peaceful surroundings. En route, cross the Kunzum La again. Upon arrival, check into camps (subject to availability and weather). Spend the evening strolling along the lakeside. Overnight stay at camps near Chandratal.
Wake up early to catch the magical sunrise over Chandratal. After breakfast, start your return journey to Manali. Enjoy the last views of the Spiti landscape and cross back over Rohtang Pass (if open). Arrive in Manali by evening. Check in to your hotel and relax. Overnight stay in Manali.
After breakfast, check out and proceed to your onward destination. You leave with lasting memories of Spiti’s stunning scenery, spiritual silence, and raw beauty. Trip ends here.
